Drinking coffee in the morning? Well, you should drink it after breakfast rather than before. This is due to a new study from the Centre for Metabolism and Nutrition at the University of Bath in the UK, which revealed that in adults with sleep disorders, drinking coffee in the morning before meals increases the amount of glucose in the blood by approximately 50%.
The researchers, led by Professor James Betts, wanted to understand the mechanisms of metabolism in adults at risk of obesity and diabetes, and conducted an experiment in which 29 people were tested after two types of sleep per night.
In the first stage, the adults who slept well had breakfast and then drank black coffee.
In the second stage, adults were disturbed in their sleep every 5 minutes, for those who drank coffee and then ate.
The results were unequivocal and showed that in a state of sleep disturbance, drinking coffee before meals is not beneficial and interferes with the body's sugar metabolism. "Didn't you sleep well? You should eat first, then drink coffee," Professor Betts explained in his conclusions.
The researchers conclude in their study that "these are, of course, preliminary results, and further research is needed to clarify the link between a person's morning wake-up process and the body's sugar processing. This is an area that has not been sufficiently studied." The researchers also recommended changing morning habits and, instead of drinking coffee right away, eating something first.
